Pavement:The waiter was the only disappointment

PAVEMENT: Sizzles and Flames doesn’t sound like the name of a restaurant. It sounds like the names of three restaurants, actually. It is situated right there with the potholes and the hurly-burly and the hooting taxis of Bugolobi, in a building above a supermarket and a huddle of ATMs.

But once you climb the stairs and rise above the fray, you will be pleasantly surprised.

We were there on Tuesday afternoon. It was blazing hot outside and the aircon filled us with relief. A waiter was there quickly enough to ask, “Table for two?” and lead us in.

The waiter scored some points when he held the seat out for Diane, my guest, but that’s about all he was going to earn.

They offer both Indian and Chinese food and have two menus in one. We decided to split the adventure.
I asked for a bit of help in deciding which chicken dish to have from the Chinese offerings.

It seemed the waiter couldn’t understand that part of the menu either because he tried clumsily to steer me to the fish.

It was a poor maneuver and just made it clear that I would be wasting my time asking him. So I picked a beef dish whose ingredients were clearly enumerated.

It made no difference, because soon he was back to inform me that the Chinese chef was not available.

So the Chicken Kampala Curry was the next most exciting thing I found on the Indian menu and I chose that.
Diane had the Mutton Roganjosh.

Both meals arrived fast and were really good: lush and full-bodied and fragrant and filling. So much so that at the end of it we could not bring ourselves to rise and go back out into the heat.

The waiter, who was the only disappointment about the whole experience, came up to us in a T-shirt and told us that they had closed the morning portion of the day and we had to leave.

They reopen for the evening at 5:30pm, and I’m sure this beautiful restaurant looks even better after sundown.
Our meals cost 55k because they tagged on the VAT and a service charge (for THAT guy?).
