SIX traffic Police officers arrested last week over bribery have been released on bond as investigations continue.

The Professional Standards Unit (PSU) commandant, John Ndungutse, last week said the officers had been released from Nsambya Police barracks where they had been detained.

The suspects, who include Jamil Kirunda, Innocent Obaa, Alfred Otim, Evans Talemwa, Patrick Dratoo and Patrick Ocen, would not resume duty until their cases have been disposed of.

On whether they would be tried in civil or police disciplinary courts, Ndungutse said their files would be forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions for perusal and advice.

Ndungutse said the Police preferred charges of corruption as per the 1998 Police Act that incriminates an officer who fails to account for money found on him while on duty.

Ndungutse reported that some of the officers had been receiving money and issuing receipts to motorists who had broken traffic laws yet the money is supposed to be banked by the offender.

The officers were arrested by PSU operatives from Matugga trading centre after complaints that they were demanding for bribes from motorists who had broken traffic laws.
