MORE than 1,500 landless people in Koch-Goma, Anaka and Purongo sub-counties in Nwoya district have requested the Government to de-gazette part of Murchison Falls Park for human settlement and agriculture.

They proposed that the Karuma-Pakwach highway be the new boundary of the park.

Currently, Kal, Agonga, Lii and Coroom in Koch-Goma, Agung, Ywaya and Pabali in Anaka and four parishes in Purongo sub-county are the boundary.

The special presidential adviser for the north, Richard Todwong, told a press conference in Gulu on Thursday that most of the landless people were orphans, widows and child-mothers.

“I have proposed de-gazetting part of the park to the President for settlement due to population pressure on the available land. I am waiting for the result,” he said.

Residents of Agung, Pabali and Ywaya parishes are engulfed in land disputes with the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA).

They have accused UWA of shifting the park boundary by about 3km into their land.
