Dear Dorah,
THE choice of a family planning method is usually done on an individual basis. What may work for you may not be convenient for others.

Some family planning methods, like condoms and femidoms, have the added advantage of protecting one against sexually transmitted diseases.

Most hormonal methods have side effects, but the occurrence and severity of the side effects largely depends on an individual.

The hormone-based methods include contraceptive pills, implants and injections.

The natural methods are less effective but have minimal or no side effects.
When choosing a family planning method, you should also consider whether you are taking any medication on a regular basis. This is because some drugs reduce the effectiveness of oral contraceptives.

The other methods include a diaphragm and the intrauterine devices. These are effective with minimal side effects. However, if you have a sexually transmitted infection, they can worsen your risk of developing uterine infections.

So, I advise you to visit a health facility and get in-depth information from a health care worker so you can make an informed decision.
