Joyce Nyakato took your questions to Robert Busingye, a gyneacologist at Mulago hospital

Dear Doctor,
I get pain in the lower abdomen midway my cycle. For about a week, the pain has been occurring for about five to 10 minutes and it is so intense that it makes my legs (from thigh to toes) pain. The pain only happens on one side of the abdomen. What could the problem be?

Dear Anonymous,
PAINS that people experience midway through their cycles are refered to as ovulation pains.

At ovulation, the egg breaks through the ovary’s wall making it painful for some women. The egg is released from the ovary with some amount of fluid and bleeding.

At the time of ovulation, blood or other fluids are released from the ruptured egg follicle which flows in the lower pelvic cavity causing some irritation.
Because ovulation occurs on a random ovary each cycle, the pain may switch sides or stay on the same side from one cycle to another.

The intensity of the pain varies in different women, but what you are describing seems to be severe. It could have other causes such as endometriosis and ovarian cysts.

Endometriosis is condition where a endometrial-like cells appear and flourish in areas outside the uterine cavity, most commonly on the ovaries.
These act like the cells found inside the uterus.

One of their symptoms is extreme pain in the legs and thighs. The symptoms often become severe during a certain time in the menstrual cycle. You should visit a gynaecologist for further examination.
