How did my uterus get wounded?

Jul 11, 2010

I want to assure you that the uterine wall is so strong that it rarely gets inflamed. Instances where it can get inflamed include after a septic abortion or a septic delivery.

Joyce Nyakato took your questions to Robert Busingye, a gyneacologist at Mulago hospital

Dear Doctor,
I am 29 years old and I have a six-year-old child. Three years ago. I used a family planning method called Norplant. After two years, I went to the doctor and had it removed. It is now a year since it was removed, but I have not conceived. About six months ago, I felt a sharp pain in my lower abdomen and went for an ultra sound scan, which showed that my uterus was inflamed. I was given treatment. Although I still feel some slight pain, the second scan showed that I was fine. Could this be the cause of my not conceiving? What causes inflammation of the uterus? I am so worried.
Sharon

Dear Sharon,
I want to assure you that the uterine wall is so strong that it rarely gets inflamed. Instances where it can get inflamed include after a septic abortion or a septic delivery.

You could have been misdiagnosed. When a woman has fluid in the lining of the uterus or is due for her menstrual period, the ultra sound scan may show that she has an inflamed uterus.
A vaginal swab could give you more accurate results.

Failure to conceive after removing the Norplant is not caused by the Norplant.
There could be other causes such as blockage of the fallopian tubes, or the problem could be with your partner.

Endometriosis and pelvic inflammatory diseases also cause abdominal pains.
Therefore, I advise you to seek medical attention to find out the real cause.

You should talk to a gynaecologist before you can resort to any fertility medication.
