KISORO district is to get tea and Irish potato processing factories.
President Yoweri Museveni made the pledge on Tuesday during a Prosperity-for-All campaign tour in the district.

Kisoro is the biggest producer of Irish potatoes in the country and is also said to grow some of the best tea in the region.

Museveni commended the residents for taking advantage of the National Agricultural Advisory Services to export products to regional and local markets.

An example is a partnership between Rubuguri Diary Farmers’ Association and Birunga Dairy Industries, which processes milk supplied by the farmers. The milk is exported to the DR Congo, Rwanda and Burundi and the rest is sold in Kampala.

The President gave Rubuguri farmers sh20m and 10 cows. Wilberforce Ngumiye of Birunga Dairy Industries said they produce 13,000 to 17,000 litres of ultra heat-treated milk daily.

The farmers said they started with 27 cows, which they gave out on a revolving basis as they reproduced.
They commended the NAADS district coordinator, Edgar Banda, for his hard work and giving them two bulls.

They also said they acquired a loan, which was supplemented by the Food and Agriculture Organisation, and bought a truck to transport their milk.
The farmers earn between sh5m to sh6m a month, which they re-invest in their savings society.

Museveni also donated sh20m and 20 cows to the group. He also directed that a mobile telephone mast be installed and said electricity would be extended to the area soon. The President also visited a farm owned by the Nkurungas.

They started farming five years ago with five chicken and now have 500 layers, 1600 chicks, cows and pigs.
They also practice bee-keeping. The couple earned sh4m in the first year, which grew to sh13m, sh25m, and are expecting sh37m this year.

Addressing a rally at Rubuguri trading centre in Kirundu sub-county, Kisoro district, the President commended the farmers for keeping Friesian cows, saying they produce more milk than indigenous ones.

The President addressed another rally at the Kisoro county headquarters, where he urged the residents to transform their households through commercialisation of agriculture.
