WITHOUT a win under his belt this season, Brian Mwesigwa is understandably not a proud leader of the Uganda Golf Union (UGU) stroke-play championship.

He has confessed, “It is very embarrassing. It’s not different from a fluke.”

Consequently, a visibly disturbed Mwesigwa has vowed to shed off the ‘nearly man’ tag in the Mehta Open in Lugazi this weekend.

Mwesigwa who leads the UGU standings with 19 points, two clear of Stephen Odong, accumulated his tally having finished the previous three events in the top three.

“I think it is my time to win and prove that I am worthy leading the championship. It hurts to lead the table without a win to show. I am better than my competitors when it comes to playing on a tight course like Lugazi. I should win this one,” Mwesigwa stated.

The Entebbe Golf Club product, coming off a failed bid to turn professional in the Kampala leg of East Africa Tour last week, has now shifted his focus back to amateur ranks.

“After the Mehta Open I want to win some more local events before I end my amateur career with victory in the Uganda Open in September,” Mwesigwa remarked.

He faces stiff competition from Jinja based Emma Opio, Grace Ocici, Fred Wanzala, Said Mawa and Ian Odokonyero who have always fared well in the tournament.
