Dear Doctor,
I always have a headache and its getting worse. It has been on for three months. Could it be related to too much work and stress?

Dear Carol,
CHRONIC headache can be frequent and severe enough to interfere with your daily activities. It is common among people who are stressed, depressed and with anxiety disorders.

Overuse of substances such as cigarettes and caffeine can also cause and worsen a headache. Overuse of medication, including that used to treat headaches can also increase its frequency and severity.

You may be suffering from tension headaches which are typically associated with stress. Medical conditions such as sinusitis, hypertension may also be the cause.

More extensive tests may rule out medical causes of constant headache, some of which may have serious consequences.

Chronic headache with no identifiable medical cause may have a constant and aggressive nature and so a comprehensive approach is necessary to achieve control.

Physical therapy may be of help if the headache occurs in relation to poor posture.

Exercise is good as it releases feel-good chemicals which relax the body. A massage will help to relieve muscle tension. Relax and try to take one day at a time.Take plenty of water and have enough rest.
