CONSTRUCTION of the Busabala-Najjanankumbi road starts in two weeks, officials from the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) announced last week at Wakiso district headquarters.

Frederick Kalegga, the project regional manager and Isaac Musisi, the station engineer, said the construction is estimated at sh1.3b, and expected to be completed in six months.

Matovu said the 11km stretch starts at Najjanankumbi, on Entebbe Road and ends at Kaazi near Lake Victoria. Only two kilometres of the stretch, which is tarmacked, is within Kampala, while the rest is in Wakiso. Hundreds of pedestrians, light and heavy duty trucks carrying construction materials and retail goods, use the road.

Prior to this announcement, the road users had lamented over its poor state and asked the Government to intervene. In August last year, the district chairman, Ian Kyeyune was humiliated when bitter residents who live near the road made him walk for almost half the entire stretch, as rowdy youth poured dust on him. They claimed the road had not been repaired for over 20 years.

According to the district officials and residents, Busabala and Namasuba-Ndejje roads are considered among the worst roads in Wakiso.
