Stop discrimination against Muslims!

EDITOR—I wish to send my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved as a result of the July 11 bomb blasts. Although al Shabab and other related terrorists have been presented in an Islamic package, I must condemn blanket accusations against practising Muslims.

I have written this letter because of my experience in one Government office in Kampala. Perhaps because I was dressed in Muslim garb according to sharia, I was picked out and selectively thoroughly checked. That was not all. I was asked to identify myself before I could enter the premises.

I know the threat on the security of the country but other people in the queue were not subjected to such a thorough search nor were they requested to identify themselves. This stereotype damages the country’s image especially during the AU summit. It is common knowledge that many of the East African coast inhabitants are of Arabian descent and are consequently bound to be practising bits of the Islamic culture.

Strict measures are appreciated but they should not be at the expense of innocent citizens.
