Lady Damali’s last message to Buganda revealed

A FEW days to her death, Lady Damali Catherine Nakawombe urged the Baganda to work for peace in the region, according to the Katikkiro of Buganda, John Baptist Walusimbi.

Walusimbi was speaking to hundreds of mourners at St. Paul’s Cathedral, Namirembe, where the late Damali, the wife of Sir Edward Mutesa II, former Kabaka of Buganda and father of Kabaka Ronald Mutebi II, was laid to rest on Monday.

Walusimbi said he visited Damali at her house at Namirembe a few days before her death and she told him to work for peace.

He was delivering a condolence message to the mourners on behalf of Buganda Kingdom.

The funeral service was led by retired Archbishop Mpalanyi Nkoyooyo.

Damali was laid to rest next to her late mother-in-law, Namasole Irene Druscilla Namaganda, the wife of the late Kabaka Daudi Chwa II, father of the late Muteesa II.

The mourners included the Prime Minister, Apolo Nsibambi, the Archbishop of Kampala Diocese, Dr. Cyprian Kizito-Lwanga, retired Archbishop Emanuel Cardinal Wamala and other religious leaders.

Princess Elizabeth Bagaya led a team from Toro, while government officials, civic leaders. Former Buganda premiers Mayanja Nkangi and Mulwanyammuli Ssemwogerere also attended the burial.

Nsibambi delivered the President’s condolence message in which he encouraged the royal family and the Baganda to be strong.

Princess Bagaya, who shed tears while delivering a message fro Tooro Kingdom, described the late Damali as a virtuous and decent lady.
