President Yoweri Museveni has urged church leaders to teach congregations modern living methods and how to support their welfare. The President also asked religious leaders to promote commercial farming in a bid to get the communities out of poverty.

“We have everything in Uganda and there are many things that can bring in money. The problem is that people have refused to change from subsistence to commercial farming. Churches must, therefore, help transform the society,” he said.

Museveni was speaking at the consecration of the Rt. Rev. Frederick Sheldon Mwesigwa as the 5th Bishop of Ankole Diocese, on Sunday. The ceremony, which took place at St. James Cathedral in Mbarara town, was presided over by the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, the Rt. Rev. Henry Luke Orombi.

Museveni congratulated Mwesigwa and gave him a new four-wheel Mitsubishi Pajero vehicle. He also gave the outgoing bishop, George Tibesigwa, a cow and thanked him for the development initiatives in the diocese. He contributed sh50m towards the completion of the diocesan office block.

The President hailed Ugandan bishops for opposing the legalisation of homosexuality and asked them to join the Government in the fight against poverty since they have a voice that reaches many people.

He added that the church should also strive to be self-sufficient by creating income-generating activities. Orombi called for love and compassion among people regardless of religious affiliation.
