RESIDENTS of Busiki county in Namutumba district are set to benefit from a sh1.5b power line. Construction works on the 22km power line, which stretches from Namutumba to Bugobi in Bulange sub-county, was launched at Buwaga trading centre on Saturday.

The project is funded by the Government under the Rural Electrification Agency of the energy ministry.

Godfrey Werikhe, the project development manager, said rural electrification currently stands at 7%, up from 1% in 2001.

“Measures have been put in place to accelerate rural electrification to 20% by 2015,” Werikhe said.

According to Werikhe, the measures include establishment of the energy fund to increase the generation capacity and rural electrification fund to cater for expansion of the national grid.

Werikhe urged residents to start wiring their houses and cautioned them against paying for electric poles.

“This is a government project and nobody is expected to pay for the poles. All you have to do is to simply wire your buildings,” Werikhe said.

The contractor, he said, is expected to complete erecting the poles within one year.

Werikhe said the priority will be given to district headquarters, agro-processing factories, health facilities, educational institutions, water and information and communication technology centres.

The Busiki county MP, Moses Mukose Mutabaali, asked for the extension of the power line to Bubutya and to have the youth employed by the contractors.
He urged residents to co-operate with the contractors.

Omega Construction is undertaking the project. The contracts manager, Arafat Saad, assured the residents that energetic youth will be employed during the construction process.
