By Norman Katende ANNET Negesa yesterday rewrote her 800m national junior record by over two seconds as she won the first semi-final to advance to the final of the World Junior Athletics Championships here in Moncton. The final is due tomorrow at 4.20am Ugandan time.
Negesa, who was regarded as an outsider before the race, ran a cautious race. She had to at least beat either of the more experienced Romanian Elena Lavrick or USA’s Laura Rousler who had also posted better times in their heats.
And when the start gun went, Negesa showed she meant business, sprinting from the fourth lane to take the lead as early as the first 120 metres.
The Iganga student never stopped until about 250m when she had set a good advantage over the chasing pack with about a 10m distance between them.
With about 200m to the finish line, she sped off, only relaxing after she was sure that she was in control, coming home in 2:02.27, about two seconds off her previous best of 2:04.20 which she only posted on Tuesday.
“I did not want to take chances. I was running against people with more experience and better times so I had to be in charge from the start,†she said after the race.
“I am now going to sleep and we shall see what happens later.â€
But it was not rosy for Joseph Chebet in the 10000m final where he finished 10th.
