Dear Doctor, My stomach rumbles and fills with gas in the morning. What could be the cause? Anonymous
Dear Anonymous, STOMACH rumbling comes about when air passes through the intestines. Generally, the muscles of the stomach and small intestine contract in a wave-like manner. Such contractions can cause the rumbling sound, especially when the stomach is empty.
This is why a rumbling stomach is known as a sign of hunger. Rumbling can also be due to incomplete digestion of foods containing carbohydrates, including milk and other dairy products. It is also common in people with abdominal ulcers.
Try to eat breakfast early everyday and see whether the rumbling will stop. Some foods, like eggs, beans and sweet potatoes, produce excess gas.
If the rumbling is accompanied by abdominal pain, cramping, belching, bloating, constipation or diarrhoea, then it might be a sign of a more serious condition, so have it investigated.
