What courses do I qualify for?
I am an S.5 student taking geography, economics, agriculture and fine art. I want to pursue a Bachelor of Science (BSC) agriculture at Makerere University. What other courses do I qualify for?

According to Makerere’s admission booklet, chemistry is the essential subject for BSC agriculture. It is multiplied by three when calculating the cut-off point.
The second essential subject is picked from the best done of biology and agriculture. Hence, it might be hard for you to get admitted if you apply for BSC agriculture because its essential subject, chemistry, is not among the subjects you are taking in A’ level. But Vincent Ekwang, the university deputy registrar for admissions, says you can try Bachelor of agribusiness management and Bachelor of agricultural and rural innovation, which require both agriculture and economics. You can also apply for courses like education and economics.

How can I benefit from my subject combination?
I am in S6 studying history, entrepreneurship, geography and fine art. What course can I take at university?
Martha

Your subject combination can qualify you for a number of courses if you pass well. They include mass communication, urban planning, development studies, law, social sciences, education and human resources management. These do not have specific essential subjects; the minimum admission requirement is two principal passes in any subjects. But there are other courses that require you to pass specific subjects; for instance, to do Bachelor of business administration, you must pass economics well. However, education consultant Fagil Mandy advises that the choice for the career to pursue should entirely depend on your interests and academic performance. This calls for hard work.

Can my grades get me into university?
I scored the following grades in A’level last year; General paper, 7; history, O; CRE, O; Luganda, C and fine art, D. What course do I qualify for at university?

According to the universities’ admission guidelines set by the national council for higher education, two principal passes in A’ level is the minimum entry requirement. This means you are eligible for admission to courses like Bachelor of industrial and fine arts and others that do not require students to have passed specific subjects like arts, social sciences and development studies among others. Also try to inquire from registrars of various universities, mostly the private ones about their available options.

Do I qualify for business studies?
I sat for A’level in 1998 and scored E, B, E in history, economics and geography. Do I qualify for business studies? Please advise me on the courses I can do.
Judith

According to the guidelines set by the National Council for Higher Education, two principal passes is all it requires for a candidate to be eligible for admission in a Ugandan university. Since you scored three principal passes, you qualify for admission. Given that you passed economics well, you are eligible for courses like business administration, human resources management, international business, business entrepreneurship and small business management. Others are business computing, procurement and supply chain management, marketing, and accounting at Makerere University Business School. Other courses are development economics and bachelor of arts in economics. At Kyambogo, you can do Bachelor of business studies with education, accounting and finance, and microfinance. Some of these courses have economics as their essential subject while others have no specific essential subjects and one can be admitted if they passed A’level. However, James Okello, the head of Makerere University Senate, advises that you choose a course in which you have the greatest interest and are sure you can manage. Inquire from registrars of other universities for alternative courses.

What can I study?
I scored 56 in eight at O’level. I got English (4), CRE (7), history (8), geography (7), math (9), agriculture (9), physics (7), chemistry (9), biology (7), and fine art (5). What courses can I take?

If your desire is to join university using your O’level results, you can only apply through the mature age entry scheme. However, only applicants aged 25 years and above are eligible for admission under this scheme. Dr. Tanga Odoi, a senior lecturer at Makerere University, says you can try arts courses like industrial fine art, social sciences and social work and social administration.
