JULY 2010 will remain memorable on the local fashion scene. For the first time ever, a Ugandan fashion designer was invited to showcase her collections at a prestigious fashion week in New York.

Stella Atal conquered the catwalk with her collection of original ethnic African fashion designs. Such was the success of Atal’s outfits that she not only sold several of them, but was also bookmarked to showcase at two other premium fashion events in the US, the Miss Africa US and 90 degrees Fashion Threat tour.

Atal said she felt privileged to showcase on Broadway and New York.Atal has already participated in a number of international shows and won fashion awards.

The African Fashion Week New York was aimed at promoting African inspired fashion designs. The event was held in the Broad Street Ballroom in Manhattan.

Atal’s collections include formal, casual and urban street outfits done in black, khaki, cream and grey tones. Though the outfits had a decidedly African flair to them (with African artwork and prints) they had a hint of the latest fashion fads as they are appreciated in New York.

That was perhaps the winning formula of Atal’s creations. She also included a lot of African chunky jewelry.

Other designers included 54 Kingdoms (Ghana), Darryl Jagga (S. Africa), Léonché (Sierre Leone), Arewa Designs (Nigeria), Fab. Fingers (UK/Nigeria), Lin-Z Inc.(Afro-American), Fares Cherait (Tunisia), LShandi (Nigeria), BebeGrafiti (Niger Delta), Frank Osodi (Nigeria), Osun Designs (Jamaica), KiRette C. (Cameroon), Qétura (Nigeria), Charlene A. (Ghana), Kosibah (UK/Nigeria), Chianu Int. (Nigeria), Kozby World (Nigeria), Vee Fashion (Kenya), Côté Minou (Cameroon), Kumba Wear (Senegal), Vida Mahimbo (Tanzania).
