MUSLIMS have said the only way to curb HIV is through reinforcing the fear of Allah and sharing HIV messages with other countries.
Mufti Shaban Mubajje made the remarks at the opening of a regional conference on Monday at the Gadaffi National Mosque in Kampala.
The theme was ‘Our shared roles in curbing HIV/AIDS in Uganda’.
In a speech read by his deputy, Abdul Mukiibi, Mubajje said: “HIV/AIDS is here forever. It’s up to us to decide and choose what to do. As East Africa, we should share and speak the same language in fighting it. The imams and sheiks are the major pillars in this partnership.â€
The three-day workshop, which drew over 200 participants from Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania Burundi and Morocco, was organised by Munazzamat-Al-Dawa- Islamiyya in conjunction with the Islamic Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation.
Zainab Akol, the HIV\AIDS manager at the health ministry, said the HIV/AIDS prevalence among Muslims was the lowest compared to other religions in the country, attributing it to circumcision.
Zaria Said, a delegate from Tanzania, also said Muslims in her country had the lowest HIV\AIDS prevalence rates, attributing it to polygamy.
