THE Prime Minister, Prof. Apolo Nsibambi, has warned religious leaders against engaging in partisan politics, saying they risk misleading their congregations.
“You should feed your congregation with the word of God, instead of giving them misleading information about politics,†Nsibambi said during a fundraising dinner for All Saints Cathedral at Serena Hotel in Kampala on Sunday.
The premier was reacting to a statement made by the Rev. Nicodemus Charles Okille, the dean of the province of the Church of Uganda.
Okille said there is a thin line between politics and religion and that all people are political animals, the reason politics cannot be separated from religion. He was representing Archbishop Henry Luke Orombi at the function.
In a speech read by Nsibambi, President Yoweri Museveni said he was happy with the expansion of the church structure, which would create more room for worshipers and other church activities.
At the function, sh105m was raised out of the sh6b needed for the first phase of the construction of the 4,000-seater cathedral. According to the plan, the project will be done in three phases.
The President donated sh5m towards the project, Nsibambi gave sh2m, while businessman James Mulwana gave sh1m.
