THERE is no place like home, is an adage we all know. Making your home heaven or hell is your challenge. You can style it to a welcoming feel or you can leave it haphazard and it will plunge you into depression.
Some homes are depressing as soon as you enter them, while in some, peace and tranquility encompass you, depending on the arrangement.
Your home should not be a place to escape from but one to abide in happily.
Consider the following if you wish to have a home full of splendour:
FURNITURE ARRANGEMENT Your sitting room should not look like a classroom nor like it has no furniture.
Ahmed Umar, an attendant at Iran Permanent Trade Centre in Kampala, says you can have a spectacular look in your house if the funiture is properly fitting.
To avoid making the room seem small or awkward, the furniture should not be too much or large. Two or three sofas can work.
A small woolen carpet matching the colour of the sofas can be placed in the middle of the sitting room.
A small, well-designed bookshelf with flower pots and books on top can also make the sitting room attractive.
THE CHOICE OF PAINT Here, a consesus must be reached. Discuss as a family, the colours appropriate for each room. Do not impose your interest on others. Instead, let the change in paint be welcomed by every family member.
LET THERE BE ENOUGH LIGHT Some people’s rooms are too stuffed and dark that sometimes it is hard to find your way even when it is day time.
Light does not only make your house feel fresh, it also helps to keep the air moving.
Some homes have high ceilings. In order to let in more light, it is advisable to put the window way up near the ceiling.
This does not only work with the sitting room, but with the entire home.
Make sure enough light and fresh air move under your beds, tables and cupboards.
This makes it easier when cleaning the room. It also keeps insects that cause diseases at bay.
ALLURING DECORATIONS Umar says place flower pots in your homes. Do not forget to mix colours.
Avoid using depressing and funeral colours. Instead, opt for simple ones like navy blue and brown.
For art pieces, opt for simple ones. Do not go for wild beast sculptures or items that will make your home look like a witchdoctor’s shrine.
“Get simple artifacts that won’t chase away visitors from your home, but rather welcome them,’’ says Umar.
SET UP A RELAXATION SPOT Nothing feels so great like going home on a stressful day and find comfort in your favourite spot.
The spot can be a rocky chair, a comfortable bench set outside your home or under a tree with a cool shade.
Sometimes it can be inside your house. You can enjoy the place with the complement of your favourite music or book.
After a hectic day, your utmost comfortable place is the best to hang out at home.
PERSONALISE YOUR HOME Any one can have rooms and call it home. However, for it to appear your home, have in it items that say so.
For instance, hang your pictures and family in frames in the sitting room.
“Pick the best and let them be few so that your home does not look cluttered and suffocated,†says Umar.
In case you have travelled, put some items that fascinated you on the journey in your home.
KEEPING THINGS CLEAN Though cleaning one’s home seems obvious, many people occasionally neglect it.
Mop your house daily and always dust items such as the television set, carpets and sofas.
That way, your home can sparkle and give your family pleasure.
The ball is now in your hands. You can make your home what you want it to be.
