Many people, especially women, want their hair to stand out. Men will ensure they get a haircut, while women will go the extra mile to add shine and colour.

Having great hair is one thing and having healthy hair is another. Did you know that a busy lifestyle, poor diet and stress could take a toll on your hair? If not attended to, hair damage can be irreversible.

Cyrus Gachoki, the managing director of Image Wise Consultancy on Entebbe Road, says one of the basics for healthy hair is shampooing. One should shampoo their hair frequently, dependent on how fast the hair gets soiled.

Hair, just like any other body part, gets dirty. The body nourishes its cells and gets rid of the waste products, so one is bound to sweat.

Hair can also get dirty due to other external factors like dust and cosmetics. If not washed often, hair can stink and cause scalp infections.

One’s hair type also plays a vital role in determining how often they should wash it. Gachoki says if one does the wetlook hairstyle, one should shampoo it more frequently than natural hair. The environment also determines how often one shampoos one’s hair.

Margueritte Tindekwire, a hair and beauty specialist at PR Naturals, Kampala, says: “Treated hair necessitates weekly washing. If your hair is thick, you can wash it daily. But she cautions that for dry hair, one must wash a couple of times to aid the production of natural oils. Natural hair, on the other hand, can be washed everyday or at one’s convenience.

Possible infections
Gachoki says unclean hair can attract several infections, including manifestations of parasites like lice and mites that cause scabies. One can also suffer from dandruff, boils and ringworms.

Gachoki advises that people should always keep their hair clean. He recommends anti-dandruff shampoo and for ringworm, a physician can prescribe an anti-fungal cream. Lice can be eliminated by shaving.

Gachoki cautions against strong alkaline shampoos because they leave the hair dry. However, if you must use one, accompany it with a conditioner.

He recommends an acid-balanced shampoo for chemically treated hair.
Gachoki says a professional hairdresser should shampoo one’s hair or one should consult on which product to use at home.
