THE Rwenzururu Kingdom Prince, Charles Nyamutswa, has been circumcised in accordance with the Bakonzo and Bamba norms. Unlike the traditional Bakonzo and Bamba circumcision ceremonies which were characterised by singing and dancing, the 10-month-old prince was circumcised at the International Hospital, Kampala.

The ritual, which was symbolic of one’s coming of age, has generally been overtaken by medical circumcision. Like the Bamaasaba of the Mt. Elgon region, the people around the Rwenzori Mountain ranges also conduct circumcision rituals in even years.

The Rwenzururu information minister, Patrick Nyamunungu, in a statement over the weekend, said: “Prince Charles Nyamutswa’ has been circumcised as required by the Bakonzo and Bamba tradition. The operation, which was witnessed by the Rwenzururu king, Omusinga Charles Wesley Mumbere, went on well and the prince is doing fine.”

The prince was born to Mumbere and Queen Agnes Ithungu on September 30, 2009. The royal family returned home last Friday after a week’s visit to New Delhi, India.
