THE battle for supremacy of mountain running between Martin Toirotich, Abraham Kiprimo and Moses Cherop is on this Saturday as the national championship rolls off in Kapchorwa.

Last year’s runners-up Cherop of Standard high club is out to dethrone defending champion Toirotich (Arua club) in one of the highly billed championship races.

The trio will however face the challenge from last year’s senior world mountain champion in Medesimo, Italy, Geoffrey Kusuro and bronze medallist James Kibet.

Toroitich, the 2008 world mountain silver medallist in Sierre – Crans Montana will try to break his best time of 44:52 minutes he posted in last year’s national championship in the 12 km race in the eastern region high altitude district of Kapchorwa.

“It’s going to be a tough championship. All the elite athletes have confirmed their participation,” local athletics body UAF publicist Namayo Mawerere stated.

Namayo added that UAF will use the championship to select a team to the September 5 World mountain running championship in Slovenia and the Africa Mountain running championship set for November in Nigeria.
