THE primary school, which was set up by residents of Namadope village in Luuka county, Kiyunga district, lacks basic furniture and buildings. Pupils attend lessons in a temporary grass-thatched structure with only benches.

The dusty floor seems to blend well with the inevitably dirty feet of the pupils. This is made worse by the dust blown by vehicles on the Iganga-Kiyunga road.

When New Vision visited Lifeland Nursery and Primary School on Friday, pupils of P1 and P2 were squatting or kneeling on the bare ground while doing an examination.

A couple of question papers were already soiled. The learners kept struggling with the strong afternoon wind that threatened to blow away their answer sheets.

Florence Kiwala, the head teacher, explained that the school was started by parents in February 2009 to save their children from travelling over 10km to the nearest Kinawanswa Primary School.

“We have 150 learners all coming from the neighbourhood. However, furniture remains a big problem as pupils do not learn to write well. They also easily lose concentration as their structure is open and by the roadside,” she said.

James Kasooba, a parent, said school fees was a major setback and asked the Government for assistance.
