THE National Resistance Movement (NRM) party leaders in Sembabule district have held prayers for peace and unity in the politically troubled district.

The day-long prayers, which attracted over 3,000 NRM leaders, the clergy and opinion leaders, were held at the district playgrounds where the violent party elections took place.

During the chaos several people were injured, including an internal security organisation officer, Capt Habib Nsamba.
Nsamba, a resident of Mateete, suffered severe injuries when Sekikubo’s bodyguard, Alex Mugabi, shot him during the scuffle.

Religious leaders from born-again churches, the Catholic faith, Islam and the Anglican church were represented.

In attendence were foreign affairs minister Sam Kutesa, the district party chairman, the district woman MP, Hanifa Kawoya, district councillors and civil servants.

The district chairman, Herman Ssentongo and Lwemiyaga MP Theodore Sekikubo, Kutesa’s political arch-rivals, did not attend.

The prayers were led by Sheikh Nuwa lubira, the Mawogola county Imam, the Rev Shark Babira, the Rev Fr John Tamale and the Rev Borad Matovu.
The anti-riot police were heavily deployed to counter any hooliganism.

After the prayers which ended at about 6:00pm, Kutesa called for reconciliation and unity and condemned election violence and hooliganism.

He added that the misuse of guns should not be tolerated. “I had six armed guards around me but I kept a low profile to avoid bloodshed and to show the difference between me and Sekikubo,” he said.

Kutesa urged Sekikubo to stop his “primitive tendencies of beating up people”.

“This is not the first time Sekikubo is acting like this. We have a series of his episodes ranging from assaulting people and security personnel, misusing guns and disrupting elections. We are fed up,” he said.

Kutesa noted that Sekikubo resorted to violence after sensing that he was going to lose the elections.

“Even if we repeat these elections, Sekikubo knows he will lose and we are ready to defend ourselves the next time he provokes us,” he warned.
