RAKAI district administration has vacated the buildings belonging to the Kooki cultural leader, the Kamuswaga.

Last year, the Kooki council passed a resolution instructing Rakai district council to vacate the buildings for failure to settle rent arrears amounting to sh60m.

Although the Kamuswaga, Apollo Sansa Kabumbuli II, locked up the buildings when the councillors had broken off for Christmas, the locks were broken and work resumed at the beginning of the year.

Kooki council then resolved to forward the matter to court. Due to accumulated arrears, Kamuswaga confiscated the district’s new double cabin pick-up truck worth sh100m.

“The district finance department has shifted from the Kamuswaga’s house and relocated to the planning unit, which was constructed for Rakai district administration by DANIDA,” the district information officer, Fred Musisi Sessanga, told New Vision.

He said other departments, including the district service commission and the district council hall, were yet to be relocated.

According to the speaker of the Kooki council, Benon Mugabi, the district administration refused to settle the debt that had accumulated over years.

An official from the Kooki council commended the district council’s decision to vacate the buildings, saying they had caused a big loss to the Kamuswaga.

“We can now plan what to do with these buildings. It is better to have them free, than having them occupied by defaulting tenants,” the official said.
