TWO NRM stalwarts, Alex Mabiriizi and Adrian Ddungu, are contesting to become the first LC5 chairman of the new Buvuma district.
The new district was carved out of Mukono and took effect on July 1. It consists of Busamuzi, Bwema, Bugaya and Nairambi sub-counties.
Whoever is elected Buvuma LC5 chairman has a great load to carry. For years, residents have been complaining about receiving a raw deal from Mukono, in terms of service delivery, education standards, sanitation and health facilities and transport. Â Alex Mabiriizi The interim chairperson of Buvuma is a resident of Mpuuga village in Bwema sub-county. He is an accountant who served in Mukono district from 1991-2002.
In 2002, Mabiriizi he was elected the district councillor for Bwema sub-county in Mukono.
He boasts of agitating for Buvuma County to be given district status. He adds that he lobbied the Government until a maternity ward was built at Namatale health centre, reducing the number of women giving birth in boats as they crossed to the mainland for maternity facilities,†said Mabiriizi.
If elected, Mabiriizi’s priorities are to construct classrooms and teachers’ houses to improve the education standard. He also plans to ensure that only qualified personnel are employed in health facilities and to get a road unit to work on the roads. Adrian Ddungu He refutes Mabiriizi’s claims that he agitated for Buvuma to gain a district status. “This was a collective effort from everybody in Buvuma,†says Ddungu.
Ddungu, who resides at Bubere village in Busamuzi sub-county, holds a diploma in purchasing and supply management from the College of Business in United Kingdom and a certificate in public administration from Makerere University.
His political profile includes being a youth chairperson for Buvuma County from 1986 to 2000. In 2006, he was elected chairman Busamuzi sub-county. He boasts of lobbying the Government to construct schools in Buvuma and NGOs to provide safe water sources.
Ddungu is confident he will win the race based on his experience as sub-county head. “Besides, I was born in Buvuma and I cannot allow a new district to remain backward yet I can work for its development,†he said.
Mabiriizi and Ddungu have to tussle it out in the primaries, where the flag-bearer will be elected.
