MARTIN Torotich is up against his old rivals in the battle to qualify for the World and the African Mountain Running Championships.

The runners have to qualify at the National Mountain Running Championships due in Kapchorwa today.

The top performers will be entered in the World Championships set for Slovenia on September 5 and the Africa event in Nigeria on November 27.

Action in Kapchorwa promises to be a battle between two experienced runners –– the National Mountain Running champion Toroitich and the World champion Geoffrey Kusuro.

The Arua team-mates are products of Kapchorwa that has produced several talented middle and long distance runners.

Besides the two main contenders for the national title, the event presents another opportunity for new talent to be spotted.

Toroitich won the 12km event held in Bukwo last year after grabbing a silver medal at the 24th World Mountain Running Championships in Switzerland in 2008.

Qualification will hand Kusuro another chance to shine on the world stage.

The runner won a silver medal and also set a new course record at the 4th edition of the Obudu Ranch Mountain Race in Nigeria in 2008.

Kusuro also boosts of a gold from the 2007 world junior championships.

The two runners will face competition from Standard Club’s James Kibet who won a bronze medal at the World Mountain Running in Italy and teammates Moses Cherop and Abraham Kiplimo.

The national meet in Kapchorwa is expected to roll off at 9am.
