LACK of experience and exposure accounted for Shamim Bangi’s defeat as badminton action started here yesterday. Bangi went down 2-0 to Germany’s Fabienne Deprez at the Singapore indoor stadium.
Africa Youth bronze medallist Bangi, who failed to match her rival from Germany, will be back in the next group games today.
Bangi lost the opening set 21-10 as Deprez prevailed with a series of brilliant baseline shots.
However after a word with her coach Gilbert Ofuyuru, Bangi’s game changed in the early second set as she took a 7-3 lead.
Bangi failed to hold onto the lead, misjudged a number of tame shots to hand Deprez a lifeline. Deprez got 13 successive points, stepped up gear for more to take the set 21-16 and victory.
“I was nervous mostly with the serves. I always forgot that she was a left hander, I have difficulty playing left-handers,†explained Bangi.
Ofuyuru said Bangi needed more mental preparation. “She was playing the group’s top seed and you expect her to be nervous but overall her performance was good.â€
Bangi is currently third in the group of four players. The top player will advance to the quarterfinals. She plays her last two group matches today, weightlifter Charles Ssekyaaya and swimmer Ham Sserunjogi will join the fray.
Meanwhile, winners and losers in preliminary rounds of the athletics event will proceed to the finals, the world body IAAF announced yesterday.
