ATHLETICS coach George Palanda has appealed to the technical committee over Tuesday’s disqualification of 400m runner Halimah Nakaayi.
Nakaayi like other competitors was a victim of the unclear sound which had them start and return to come back to the starting blocks thinking that it was a false start call.
In the process, she stepped into another lane, before realising that some of her friends had continued to run and then resumed. The results of the appeal will be known today
Today, Zakariya Kiprotich takes part in the 2000m steeple chase semi-final, while swimmer Ham Sserunjogi will be competing in the 50m butterfly.
Meanwhile Shamim Bangi got her act together coming from a set down to beat Maldivian Afnaan Aisha Rasheed 19-21, 21-8, 21-12 in her last group game of the Inaugural Youth Olympics badminton championships at the Singapore Indoor stadium.
Bangi is now preparing to take part in the IOC culture and education programme- open to athletes who have finished their competition.
In weightlifting, Charles Ssekyaaya will have no time to rest, as he now has to turn his focus to qualifying for the London 2012 weightlifting event by taking part in the World weightlifting championships due in Antalya, Turkey next month.
In order to qualify for the Olympic Games, Ssekyaaya has to accumulate points by taking part in the different international events, with the September 13-27 World Weightlifting championships providing that opportunity.
“He is going to step up training for the world championships. We are trying to look for funds. The more he competes, the more he gains experience and improves,†explained Salim Musoke his coach.
Ssekyaaya has since improved by over 20kg ever since he won a bronze medal in the Pune Commonwealth Youth Games two years back.
