ATo be admitted for a master’s degree, a student ought to have acquired at least a second (lower) class bachelor’s degree. Vincent Ekwang, the Makerere University admissions registrar, says a pass degree cannot make you eligible for admission to a master’s programme despite your rich experience. He says you would be considered if you had a postgraduate diploma. You can seek further advice from Makerere and other universities.

QI have a daughter who is in S.6 and she is doing history, geography and divinity/literature. What courses can she take at university?

AAccording to the Joint Admissions booklet, your daughter may pick from, but not limited to, law, mass communication, education, social sciences, social work and social administration, library and information sciences, archives and records management, human resources management, tourism, urban planning and secretarial studies if she passes well. You can help her choose the best course basing on her potential.

QI applied for a bachelor of economics degree course at university. What career opportunities will this qualification open for me?

ACareer opportunities depend on the particular area of economics in which you will specialise. However, Peter Odoki, Makerere University Business School spokesman, says many graduates with bachelor’s degrees in economics find jobs in business, finance, banks, insurance, and other related fields. Numerous positions in sales can also be available. Bachelor’s degree holders with good quantitative skills and a strong background in mathematics, statistics, and survey design may be hired as researchers. Some find jobs in government agencies like the Uganda Investment Authority, Export Promotions Board and the finance ministry while others may become teachers of economics.

QI studied HEG/D and scored 00D/E. I have failed to make a clear choice of the course to take between bachelor of tourism, environment management and wildlife management. Of these, which one has high chances of getting me a job?

AThe three courses are related and could land you a job almost in similar organisations. Tourism can get you a job in the tourism sector, especially tour companies, while wildlife and environment management, can enable you work for natural conservation NGOs and government agencies like NEMA and UWA, according to Prof. Baker Nyakaana of Makerere University. He says you can succeed with any of the three courses, but advises you to also acquire special skills to cope with the competitive world.

QI did HEG/entrepreneurship and l scored BEBE and a point in GP. Can I be admitted for the bachelor of commerce course at Makerere? Anonymous

AMathematics and economics are the essential subjects for bachelor of commerce, according to Makerere’s admission guidelines. The university’s deputy registrar, Vincent Ekwang, says it might be hard for you to compete for admission since you did not study mathematics at A’ level and performed poorly in economics.
