NRM primaries in Mbarara Municipality officially kicked off on Tuesday at Kasingenge in Kakoba division.

Eight candidates are vying for the Mbarara Municipality MP seat, currently occupied by John Arimpa Kigyagi. He announced that he would not contest for the seat again.

Kigyagyi took over from Winnie Byanyima, who resigned for a UN job in 2005.

The candidates are Dauda Barinda, James Tweheyo, Hanifa Karadi, Deogratiuos Kwezi Kazeyi, Isaac Kawoya, Emmanuel Bukabeeba, Dr. Medard Bitekyerezo and Michael Tusiime.

Drama ensued when Bukabeeba failed to get a round of applause from the crowd. He decided to sing and dance to a local song called “Rukundo egumeho” (love should remain with them), causing laughter and shouts of “Agende” (He should go).

Bitekyerezo was asked why he was charging consultation fees at his private hospital. He was also asked why he was leaving his profession for politics.

All the candidates vowed to fight poverty, corruption, unemployment and advocate for good roads, schools and hospitals.

Tweheyo, who served as a teacher for many years, said he fought for teachers’ rights.

Several candidates in Kakoba division also surfaced at the rally, including Kakoba division LC3 chairman Rashid Mukasa, who is competing with Abubakar Kazibwe for the same post.

The campaigns for mayors were supposed to start on Wednesday, according to the timetable. But Wilson Tumwine stole the show when he campaigned at the rally.

This angered David Bashakara, who is his only challenger. He asked the NRM electoral commission to order all candidates to follow the campaign time table.
