THE National Resistance Movement (NRM) party is fighting to win back Mukono Municipality from the Democratic Party.

The NRM is fronting two women to challenge Betty Nambooze (DP) in the newly-created municipality.

They are Beatrice Yiga, the former Goma sub-county chairperson and Lillian Nakawesi, the Mukono town council female district councillor.

Nambooze, who is the Mukono North MP, has declared her intention to contest in the municipality. However, unlike her opponents who have already put up posters around the municipality, Nambooze has not.

She enjoys the support of the masses, but district DP leaders are against her because she supports the Inter-Party Cooperation, yet DP does not.

Nambooze hails from Nakabago village in Mukono central division.

No male aspirant has shown interest in the race. The Rev. Peter Bakaluba Mukasa who could have taken Nambooze on, is out of the race.

He is contesting in Mukono South because the current MP, Janat Mukwaya, has said she is not seeking re-election.

Nambooze went to Parliament mid this year after defeating Bakaluba in a by-election.

Bakaluba and Nambooze both contested for the Mukono North MP seat in 2006 and Bakaluba won.

However, Nambooze petitioned the courts claiming that Bakaluba had rigged the elections and the Supreme Court ruled in her favour.

Determined to show the public he did not rig the 2006 elections, Bakaluba contested in the by-elections, but lost.

Nambooze’s opponents are well-known in the constituency and have the financial muscle to fund their campaigns.

Their challenge is that each seems to belong to particular NRM cliques in the district.

Yiga is not in good books with the NRM mainstream camp because she contested as an independent against the NRM candidate for Goma sub-county in the recent by-elections.

Nakawesi is facing resistance from NRM leaders who are opposing her close friend, Francis Lukooya, who is the current LC5 chairman.

Mukono municipality is a new entity, that was created on July 1. Before becoming a municipality, Mukono town council and Goma sub-county were under Mukono North.

Mukono Municipality will cease to be part of Mukono North constituency after 2011.
