VENDORS in Pallisa central market have opposed the relocation of the market.
The market, which operates every Saturday, is located in industrial area in Pallisa town.
Pallisa town council blames the vendors for the accumulation of garbage in the town.
“We cannot move out of this place because we pay the market dues. Let them use that money for collecting garbage,†Malaki Okiror told New Vision on Friday.
Joshua Wasugirya said he has been vending in the market for 10 years. “Are they going to construct a modern market elsewhere? If garbage is their problem, then let them stop collecting market dues from us so that we start collecting the garbage ourselves.â€
“Pallisa town council is creating more problems, including the failure to compensate some people after their houses were demolished to pave way for the opening of some roads,†Moses Musoke said.
He called on the town council to sensitise the people on proper disposal of garbage.
“People travel from as far as Mbale and Budaka to trade in this market, because they are used to it. Taking it somewhere else means taking us to ground zero,†said Joyce Mugala.
The Pallisa town LC3 chairperson, John Okou Opolot, said they intend to shift the market outside the town.
“Cleaning the town is very difficult yet the money we collect from that market is very little,†he said.
Opolot noted that they use sh1.2m monthly on garbage collection. “We need sh4m monthly to collect the garbage.â€
He appealed to the residents to dispose of waste at gazetted points.
