A UK charity has carried out renovations worth sh250m at St. Kizito Mpungwe Primary School in Buwenge sub-county, Jinja district.
The Scouts and Softpower Education furnished the school’s six classrooms and office and also donated a water tank, sports equipment and scholastic materials to the school, located in the sugar cane growing community of Mpungwe.
There was jubilation when 150 three-seater desks were delivered to the school last week
Sally and Ian King, the leaders of the charity, urged the community to value the education of their children, saying it is the only investment to their future.
“The scouts are proud to contribute to social change in this community and our wish is that parents encourage their children to study,†Sally said.
The Kagoma parish priest, Fr. Okello Wandera, said the school and community were needy and God had answered their prayers.
Okello urged the community to make the best use of the school.
“Education is not a waste of resources and time,†he said.
The chairperson of the school management committee, Ruth Nabirye, commended the charity for rehabilitating the school.
She said many parents and children had ignored education in favour of sugar cane growing, missing out on national employment opportunities.
“We lagged behind, but this facility has re-awakened the community to take on education and catch up.â€
