PRESIDENT Yoweri Museveni has picked nomination forms for re-election as the chairman of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party as several other bigwigs got similar papers to vie for leadership posts in the party.
Sources at the party’s electoral commission at the headquarters on Plot 11, Kyadondo Road in Kampala said the President’s nomination papers were picked by an aide in the morning. By press time, 41 people had received the forms.
Museveni is the incumbent national chairman of the ruling party. Capt. Daudi Magulu has also picked forms to take on his commander-in-chief as national chairman.
The Vice-President, Prof. Gilbert Bukenya, also picked forms for the post of party secretary general.
His rivals for the post, trade minister Maj. Gen. Kahinda Otafiire and Lwemiyaga MP Theodore Ssekikubo, also picked forms. They want to dethrone security minister Amama Mbabazi, the incumbent.
The deputy Speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga, wants to retain her position as second national vice-chairperson.
Former health minister Capt. Mike Mukula, Uganda’s high commissioner to Kenya, Brig. Matayo Kyaligonza, and Dokolo MP Okot Ogong picked forms for vice-chairman of the east, west and northern regions, respectively.
Energy state minister Peter Lokeris and technology state minister Simon Lokodo and Pian MP Remigio Achia are targeting the post of chairperson for the newly-created post for Karamoja region.
Muhammed Nsereko, who beat former minister Capt. Francis Babu to become chairman of NRM in Kampala, wants to become national vice-chairman for the newly-created Kampala region.
The President’s former principal private secretary (PPS), Amelia Kyambadde, also picked forms to contest for the national treasurer’s office.
Several of her supporters thronged the party headquarters distributing flyers in which she promises to be, “trustworthy, transparent and committed.â€
Kyambadde will face off with Arvind Patel and Jane Akwero Odwong. Patel, who is also vying for the Kampala central parliamentary seat, says past treasurers have ignored resource mobilisation for the party. Odwong has been leader of MPs’ SACCOs.
Both Stephen Masinde and Davidson Sserunjogi want to become the deputy national treasurer.
Kawempe youth leader Hakim Kityo wants to be the vice-chairperson of the newly-created Kampala region. He says the “latest arrivals†in the party should give a chance to the experienced mobilisers to steer the party.
Deus Mwesigye, who says he has been mobilising for the party across the country, seeks to replace Moses Kigongo as NRM national vice-chairperson. Kigongo, a mobiliser, has been NRM vice-chairman since the party came to power in January 1986.
“The post has been rendered useless. The national vice-chairperson should be cris-crossing the country mobilising for the party. But everywhere you go, it’s the chairman, what does the vice-chairperson do?†Mwesigye asked.
Joseph Ssewava wants to become the national youth league leader Twaha Sonko is eyeing the workers league, while Abudalla Kiggundu targets the national chair for the elderly.
Dominic Mafwabi Gidudu will fight to retain his position as vice-chairperson of the NRM elders league in the eastern region. Paul Lwanyaga and Charles Asiimwe Balundi think they are fit for the post of chairperson of the national league of persons with disabilities.
Lwanyaga, a bush war veteran, argues that inventors of social and economic empowerment programmes design them without the disabled in mind. Asiimwe asserts that unemployment among the disabled needs to be tackled.
Former MP Tezira Jamwa picked forms for deputy general secretary for special organisations, while Kampala-based businessman Kissim Omar seeks to retain his post of general secretary of the entrepreneurs’ league.
Former Lubaga North MP Tom Kayongo picked forms for the post of vice-chairperson of the elders league for Kampala region.
NRM-Electoral commissioner Lydia Wanyoto said so far, 41 people had picked forms. Applicants have up to Friday to return the forms, which will be forwarded to the central executive committee for screening and finally to the national executive committee for approval.
