THE Uganda National Examination Board (UNEB) executive secretary, Matthew Bukenya, has released examination timetables and calendars for the 2010 Primary Leaving Examinations, Uganda Ordinary Certificate of Education and the Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education.

Primary candidates will have their briefing on November 1 and sit their examinations on November 2 and 3.

O’level students will be briefed on October 15. Their examinations will start on October 18 and end November 23.

A’ level students will have their briefing on Friday, November 12 and their examinations will start on November 15. The examinations are supposed to end on December 3.

On Monday, secondary schools opened for the third term.

Community polytechnics, national and primary teachers’ colleges and universities also reopened over the weekend.

The third term is one of the busiest and shortest because candidate classes are required to complete their syllabi to give students time to revise ahead of the national examinations.

The assistant commissioner for secondary education, Francis Agula, said some government-aided secondary schools may be required to close during the national examinations period to free space for the big number of Senior Four candidates.

“Facilities in some schools may not be enough, which might interrupt lessons for continuing students,” he said.

The pioneers of free secondary education will sit their O’level examinations this year, increasing the number of candidates to 350,000 from 217,000 last year.
