THE National Water and Sewerage Corporation is investigating city developers who have not connected their drainage systems to the main sewer line.

Eng. Dominic Kavutse, the commissioner of urban water and sewerage services, said because of not following procedures, sewage overflows, which compromises public health and increases costs of treating water.

Kavutse was speaking at a press conference at Munyonyo Speke Resort Hotel in Kampala recently.

“Combating the habit of releasing human waste into the public is a collective responsibility. Culprits should be reported to concerned authorities for action,” Kavutse said.

On Tuesday, business and pedestrian movement stalled on Burton Street above the Old Taxi Park due to overflowing sewage from Platinum and Royal Complex buildings.

National Water had to rescue the situation by emptying the sewage cesspool to control the overflowing that had reached Shoprite Supermarket on Entebbe Road.

Communities around the area said sewage overflow is common in the area.

Joseph Mugerwa, a vendor, said Kampala City Council was silent about the situation, adding that food and fruits are sold in the area, which could cause disease outbreaks.
