THE country’s Commonwealth Games team will be paraded at the Cranes versus Angola match at Namboole in a bid to drum support for the New-Dehli bound contingent.
The games team will walk onto the field with the national soccer side the Cranes and wave to the 40,000 spectators expected for the match.
The Cranes face Angola on September 4 in their opening match for the 2012 Nations Cup qualifier. Uganda Olympic Committee vice president Wilson Tumwine said yesterday the team show is aimed at bringing it closer to Ugandans.
“Usually most Ugandans only learn of their teams at such games when the teams have already left. We need support of the sports fraternity for the different national teams,†Tumwine told the weekly Commonwealth Games press conference at Lugogo yesterday.
Uganda will field its biggest ever Commonwealth Games team of 72 athletes from ten disciplines, 15 coaches, seven officials and two journalists.
President Museveni is expected to flag off the team two weeks before the games start New Delhi, India on October 3. Tumwine said that the contingent will for a fortnight before the games acclimatize in the Indian capital.
Squash has meanwhile named a team of four that has Michael Kawooya, Brian Okumu, Ian Rukunya and Sam Kyagulanyi while archery will field a one-man team of Peter Bwire.
Meanwhile UOC has named Bob Ssebugwawo the official fitness and nutrition expert for guidance on the team’s diet and drug related issues.
