Women ready for Olympiad debut

UGANDAN women will for the first time feature at the World Chess Olympiad. The Uganda Chess Federation (UCF) has lined up five players to train for the event set for Russia from September 19-October 4.

UCF confirmed yesterday they had secured $10,000 (sh22.6m) in sponsorship from well wishers to purchase tickets for a contingent of 13 including men.

The men’s team has Harold Wanyama, Patrick Kawuma due to make a maiden appearance at the world’s top chess show, FIDE master Stephen Kawuma, Shadrack Kantinti, Bob Bibasa, Stephen Kisuze (captain and official).

The women’s team has Ivy Amoko, Phiona Mutesi, Joan Butindo, Grace Kigenyi and Rita Nsubuga Nansove.

An official Godfrey Gali is the overall team captain and will accompany the team with the UCF chairman Joseph Kaamu.
