Q I have a pass diploma in civil engineering from UNEB. Can I apply for a degree course in civil engineering at Makerere? Anonymous
AMakerere University spokesperson, Ritah Namisango, says the minimum admission requirement under the diploma holders’ entry scheme is a second class or credit diploma or the equivalent relevant to their desired fields of study. So you are not eligible for the course. However, if you are aged 25 years and above, you can apply through the mature age entry scheme where no specific academic qualifications are required for admission.

QI was a student at Makerere University, I did my clearance this year and someone helped me get my transcripts. I am in China now and I want to pursue my MBA. How can I get my certificate? Is it possible to get it online? Mango
AMakerere University academic registrar Alfred Namoah says they have not yet reached the level of sending certificates online. However, he says they can photocopy/scan your certificate and send you a copy if you write asking for it. He says it can take about a week for you to receive a copy of the certificate.

QI completed a certificate course in environmental health science last year and I got a credit. Can I use that certificate to apply for a diploma in nursing? Joyce

AThe chairperson of the Association of Principals of Health Training Institutions in Uganda (APHTIU), Helen Mukakarisa, says you can apply but you can only be admitted if you sit for and pass an entry test. A certificate in environmental health science alone is not enough. But to be admitted is also dependant on how well you passed O’ level biology and chemistry as the two subjects are essential for nursing.

QI scored 4 points in A’ level: economics (0), history (0), CRE (0) and C4 in general paper. Can I join a university for any course?
N.Patrick
ATo qualify for a degree course you should have at least two principal passes in A’ level, as per the National Council for Higher Education guidelines. Since you got only subsidiaries, you cannot join university, not even for diploma courses.

The dean of social sciences faculty Makerere University, Prof. Edward Kirumira, says you should use your O’ level certificate (if you got good grades) to enroll for a certificate course if you can’t repeat S6. Alternatively, you can apply through the mature age entry scheme if you are aged 25 years and above.

QI sat for O’ level in 2001 and obtained C5 in English, math 5, geography 3, History 3, CRE 5, health science 4, commerce 4 but my Fine Art results didn’t come out. I sat for A’ level in 2003 and scored: economics (O) history E, geography D, and Fine Art D. Later I obtained a diploma in procurement and logistics management from MUBS. Do I qualify for a degree in the same field with only seven subjects in O’ level?
Sam Muzungu

AMathematics and economics are the essential subjects for bachelor of commerce, according to Makerere’s admission guidelines. The university’s deputy registrar, Vincent Ekwang, says it might be hard to compete for admission since you did not study mathematics at A’ level and performed poorly in economics.

QI sat my final papers in 2007 at MUBS but failed one paper. I resat it but failed again. Is it possible to retake the paper now if I didn’t apply for a dead year and it is past two years now?Andrew

According to the acting academic registrar of Kyambogo University, Ann Mugerwa, you can be admitted for a diploma course if you posses a certificate in a similar profession.
