THE ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party has postponed its elective special organs and national delegates’ conference.

The national conference of special organs was to convene from September 2 to 5 but has been moved to September 6 and 7.

The first meeting of the second national conference of the party was slated for September 7 to 10 but has been changed to September 11 and 12.

The NRM secretary general, Amama Mbabazi, told journalists at the party headquarters at Plot 10, Kyaddondo Road yesterday that the dates clashed with the Cranes match against Angola.

“The NRM greatly supports the game of football and sports in general. We call upon all members of NRM and Ugandans at large to turn up massively and support the Cranes on September 4,” he said.

Mbabazi, who is also the security minister, added: “The NRM respects and honours important religious events in the country, and accordingly calls upon the entire country to join the Muslim faith in celebrating Idd el Fitr.”

Idd el Fitr festivities are expected on September 9.

On the violence in the NRM primaries, Mbabazi said the clashes did not portray NRM in the best image. “Some violence verges on criminality and should interest the Police.”

He said the party would clamp down on members who tarnish the name of the party. Mbabazi warned members who oppose the party flag-bearers or stand as independents of grave consequences.

The minister denied accusations that he was planting candidates to contest against members who had refused to bow for him in Kigezi region.

Present were acting chairperson of the NRM electoral commission Felicitus Magomu and commissioners Lydia Wanyoto and Israel Kayonde.

Asked about party members who were given provisional nominations to compete in NRM primaries on Monday, Magomu said the list of the 46 was sent to the National Council of Higher Education and was approved.

On reports that Sembabule MP Hanifa Kawooya had been disqualified, he said the case about her academic credentials was still under investigation, adding that she had not yet been disqualified.
