THE National Resistance Movement (NRM) special organs convene today at Namboole Stadium. They include the youth, workers, persons with disabilities (PWDs), women, elders, entrepreneurs, institutions leagues, NRA/M veterans, NRM branches in the diaspora and the historical leaders forum.

The youth, workers and persons with disabilities leagues will use the conferences to elect NRM parliamentary flag-bearers, according to NRM spokesperson Ofwono Opondo.

Opondo explained that the organs will also review their leaders’ performance for the past five years and elect new leaders.

The party will then meet on September 11 and 12 to review the performance of the executive, get the chairman’s report, elect new office bearers and choose the party’s presidential candidate.

President Yoweri Museveni, the party chairman, is standing for re-election as the party leader and as its flag-bearer in next year’s general elections. Other aspirants for the seat of party chairman are former State House aides, Dr. Elizabeth Nabatanzi and Capt. Daudi Maguru.

Ofwono explained that each aspirant for the post of party leader will give key challenges facing the nation and propose remedies. The proposals will be fed into the NRM 2011 manifesto.

Meanwhile, the NRM Central Executive Committee (CEC) met yesterday to receive a report from the secretary general, Amama Mbabazi, on the on-going primaries. The elections have been marred by malpractices and violence.

The party publicist said CEC was also drafting the agenda for the special organs and the national conference.

He downplayed the effect that the controversial party primaries could have on the two meetings, saying most delegates were elected in July during the grassroots elections.

Mbabazi said in areas where polls are pending, the incumbent MP and the challenger would be admitted.
