The Acholi traditional council is to revive cultural norms lost during the 20-year insurgency in northern Uganda. The Acholi paramount chief, David Onen-Acana II, who is also the chairman of the council, said the war by the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) rebels had destroyed the rich culture of Acholi.

Onen-Acana made the remarks on Saturday when a team from Radio Rupiny met him at the council headquarters at Bar-Dege Division in Gulu Municipality.

The visit was to discuss the morning slot for the Te-Kwaro cultural programme that is presented on the radio every Saturday. The radio programme manager, Monica Okot, explained to Onen-Acana that the programme was to enable the Ker-Kal-Kwaro (Acholi traditional council) educate the Acholi on cultural practices.

“This will help us at the Ker-Kal-Kwaro to promote the Acholi culture destroyed by the LRA war and educate our people on how they should behave,” Onen-Acana said.

“The council aims at reviving the fluent speaking of the Acholi language, the traditional dances, traditional inter-marriages, communal work and respect for elders.”

Onen-Acana lauded the Vision Group for starting Radio Rupiny and the programme. He called upon the Acholi people to practice their original norms like parents arranging courtships among mature boys and girls.
