GOLFER of the moment Brian Mwesigwa has stretched his lead in the Uganda Golf Union stroke play championships to seven points ahead of the next union tournament.

The Kampala golfer is coming of a major win at the weekend that saw him lift the 70th Uganda Open.
The success earned Mwesigwa eight points and he now leads the contest with 31 points.

Previous stroke play leader Said Mawa has dropped to second position with 24.5 points while Emmanuel Onito Opio, has jumped from fifth position to third with 20.5 after finishing fourth at the prestigious Open.

Mwesigwa is one of the most consistent golfers on the local scene, but had not won a major event until he landed the Uganda Open title.

The soft spoken player is contemplating joining the professional.

Mwesigwa is on the national team that will be defending the East African

Golf Challenge in Kigali, Rwanda in November.

“I have received the green light from the Union to turn professional, but they want me to first play for the Ugandan team in Rwanda,” Mwesigwa said.

“I am looking forward to playing as a professional and to face the challenges that lie ahead.”

But former professional player Stephen Kasaija said after the Uganda Open that Mwesigwa is not ready to turn professional.

Kasaija, who reverted to the amateur category after a four-year stint in the paid ranks, explained that Mwesigwa should go for more international exposure.

He added that Mwesigwa is still needed in the amateur’s team.
