OVER 4,000 NRM supporters in Bugiri failed to vote in the primaries after a presiding officer fled with the ballot papers.

The presiding officer of Bulesa sub-county, Eliasa Samanya, reportedly got 5,200 ballot papers from the party’s offices, claiming he was going to conduct the voting exercise.

The assistant NRM district returning officer, Sylvia Mutambo, said efforts to trace Samanya proved futile, adding that his phones were switched off. Mutambo said the matter was to be referred to the Police.

Three sub-counties were not able to vote because of lack of ballot papers. They are Bulesa, Kapyanga and Bugiri.
Many of the polling stations received about 20 ballot papers, yet they had over 500 registered party members eligible to vote.

Mutambo said due to the shortage of ballot papers, over 4,000 people failed to vote.
