THEY lost to defending champions Heathens in the 1st leg of the Hima National 7s Circuit in Entebbe but Impis impressed everyone and were clearly the crowd favourites.

Kitted in an eye catching All Black out fit, the university students enjoyed themselves mesmerising opponents and crowd alike with their pace, fancy foot work and ball handling skills.

Impis come-from-behind victory against former champions Kobs was one of the highlights of the tournament.
In the first half against Heathens, Impis drew first blood before collapsing under unrelenting pressure from the former champions.

Today, Impis are hosts of the second leg of the national 7s circuit that will be held at the Makerere University rugby grounds.

Home advantage

Impis must take advantage of this home and crowd advantage. Now is the time for the university students to pull out all the stops to win their home circuit and have a go at winning their first national sevens circuit.
Impis, Heathens tipped
With former champions Kobs struggling to cope with the loss of their players to the national team, it appears only Heathens stand in the path of Impis.

Despite similar problems, Heathens have shown remarkable strength in depth by winning the Entebbe 7s but further injuries to Arthur Ngolobe and now only available fly half Brian Tabaruka should surely work in Impis favour.

Outstanding players

Impis Kenyan player Marlon Ondiegi was named MVP of the 1st leg after eluding opponent after opponent with his pace and foot work.
He will be one to watch out for as he leads the Impis challenge today.

Three former 7s internationals from Heathens who missed out on CWGs selection have made very strong statements.

Evans Kingasia’s workmanlike ethic saw him put up a man of the match performance in the finals. Bishop Onen, his showmanship notwithstanding, ended the tournament as top try scorer and joint top scorer with nippy pocket sized rocket Brian Kikaawa who was scything through opponents and bringing down opponents twice his size.

National team to be tested

The national team select side under preparations for the CWGs next month finally make their long awaited debut.

Delayed funding from UOC has unfortunately denied the team any chance at any international preparations and as thus the national 7s circuit will be the only preparations they will get.

It’s pity the team could not get better quality opposition by participating in some of the Kenyan 7s circuits that are run on the standard IRB 2 day minimum format unlike our 1 day tournaments.
