Bunyoro queen mother laid to rest

THE Queen Mother of the Omukama of Bunyoro-Kitara kingdom, Gertrude Komweru Gafabusa Ateenyi, was on Tuesday laid to rest at Mparo royal burial grounds in Hoima municipality.

THE Queen Mother of the Omukama of Bunyoro-Kitara kingdom, Gertrude Komweru Gafabusa Ateenyi, was on Tuesday laid to rest at Mparo royal burial grounds in Hoima municipality.

Komweri, 91, succumbed to cancer and hypertension on Sunday morning at her late husband, Sir Tito Winyi’s, home in Bucunga cell in Mparo division.

The funeral service was held in the Rukurato (kingdom parliament) hall. President Yoweri Museveni, in a speech read by the second deputy prime minister, Henry Kajura, said the passing of the Queen Mother was a great loss to the entire nation.

“The passing of the Queen Mother is a great loss to the family, kingdom and the entire nation,” he said. Museveni, who contributed sh10m towards the funeral ceremony, described Komweru as a God-fearing, loving and an exemplary mother of the people of Bunyoro.

He hailed the deceased for preserving and promoting culture in Bunyoro-Kirara kingdom, adding that the legacy she has left behind should be emulated by the people of Bunyoro.

The kingdom prime minister, Yabezi Kiiza, said Komweri was born in 1919 in the family of Edward Mudoli and Mudoli Bayoga.

He added that Komweri met Tito Winyi at Duhaga Girls’ School in 1937. The late Queen Mother is survived by King Solomon Gafabusa Iguru and princesses Ruth Bushaara and Juliet Kabacunga.

The Bunyoro Kitara diocese bishop, Nathan Kyamanywa, the bishop of Hoima Catholic diocese Deogratias Byabazaire and Bunyoro district khadi Musa Mabanja described her as a loving and generous mother.
