UGANDA'S permanent representative to the United Nations Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda has lauded the International Community of Banyakigezi for its efforts in supplementing government development programmes.

Addressing hundreds of members at the ninth convention at the Westin Boston Water front Hotel in Massachusetts, USA on Sunday, Rugunda commended the long-serving president, Dr. Frank Byamugisha, for steering the voluntary body.

On concerns by vice-president Dr. Mulera-Muniini that the Government had not addressed many pressing problems in the country, Rugunda said the Government was doing all it can to improve all sectors, citing education and health as top priorities.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Rugunda cited the construction of an ultra-modern hospital in Nakasero, Kampala, which he said would supplement services offered by other health institutions.

He also hailed the universal primary education programme, which he said had enabled millions of children in Uganda to go to school.

He defended the government’s decision to construct a new State House and the purchase of a new presidential jet, saying it was fitting for a head of state to live in a decent place.

The presidential jet, Rugunda said, was to enhance the safety of the president particularly in this era of international terrorism.

The convention was also addressed by the governor of the Bank of Uganda, Prof. Tumusiime Mutebile and former finance minister Dr. Ezra Suruma.

A new committee was elected with Johnson Mujungu from the London Chapter and Ruth Ndyabahika of Boston USA as president and vice-president, respectively.

The group was founded in 2003 with the aim of promoting cultural, social and economic development of Banyakigezi in Uganda and the Diaspora.
